We had been on the phone interview for about a half hour. I had said ummmmmm about 239,495,494 times, stumbled over my words, laughed loudly, talked candidly…let me think…was there anything else I did on the call from the list of THINGS NOT TO DO IN AN INTERVIEW?
However, once the call ended there was only one question that stuck out, only one question I was upset with how I answered, only question that I didn’t answer honestly “…off the topic since you are a photographer who is your favorite artist?”…ummmm, ummmm, ummmm….I’m an artist right? I’m suppose to have an answer right? I am suppose to name a handful of famous painters and nail the accents in their famous names…right…isn’t that what I’m suppose to do? NO. That is not what I am suppose to do. I am suppose to be myself and answer honestly, but I let my “what I’m suppose to do” get in my way and said…wait for it…. “I don’t have one.” Yep…that is really what I said!
If I had the whole moment to do over again I would say with pride and confidence, “My favorite artist is Jasmine Star, I love what she stands for, her openness and willingness to share her gift and I love seeing “love” through her eyes. I also really love Jose Villa, his soft colors and images really allow you to fall in love with both him and his images.”I had a list of 20 photographers that really inspire me and I just froze, because I was trying so hard to come up with the right answer, when all along the right answer was right on the tip of my tongue.
I learned a valuable lesson today.
Have a wonderful Wednesday…what valuable lessons have you learned lately?
